Each story writer, reviewed
What it is like to write a story with each one, and the catch.
01Feldar Ours
Best for writing your own stories from a scene plan, with AI you approve
Feldar is the writing app we make. A story starts as a plan: describe what happens next and Feldar suggests a list of scenes, which you rewrite, reorder or delete. Then you write, with help where you want it. Continue from here adds text at your cursor in blue, with Accept, Revise and Dismiss beside it. Draft Page writes a chapter from its scenes at the length you set. Select any passage to tighten it, deepen it or raise the tension, and see each change marked before you apply it.
Characters, places and objects live on Canvas cards beside the story, so the AI knows them every time you ask. When the draft is done, Lens personas read it and react, and five Checks look for slips in grammar, clarity, word choice, dialogue and point of view.
- Good
- The story stays yours: AI text is marked until you accept it. Planning and story memory you can see and edit. GPT-6 and Claude 5.5 models. Feldar does not train AI models on your writing.
- Watch out
- It will not write a whole story from one prompt for you; it is built for writers. Web and Mac only, no offline mode, no phone app. English only. AI uses credits.
- Price
- Starter free with 500 credits, no card. Core $20 a month or $180 a year. Pro $40 or $400. Ultra $200 or $2,220.

02NovelAI
Best for generating stories you steer as they go
NovelAI is the most enjoyable pure story generator here. Write an opening, let it continue, nudge it, let it continue again. A Lorebook keeps world details in play, a text adventure mode turns the story into a game, and image generation is included. Story generation runs on GLM 4.6, with NovelAI's own models on the top tier.
- Good
- Stories are encrypted end to end and NovelAI says it cannot read them. Unlimited text generation on paid tiers.
- Watch out
- No chapters, outlining or book export. The biggest context, which helps long stories, is on the top tier.
- Price
- Tablet $10, Scroll $15, Opus $25, each for 30 days. 50 free text generations.

03Sudowrite
Best for drafting fiction fast with fiction-tuned models
Sudowrite sits between partner and generator: it works on your draft, but it is happy to write a lot of it. Write, Rewrite, Describe, Expand and Brainstorm cover most of what a story needs, its Story Bible keeps characters and outline in view, and its own models, Muse and Ballad, are tuned for fiction.
- Good
- Fiction-first tools and models. iOS and Android apps. A large community. It says it does not train on your writing.
- Watch out
- Credits run down with heavy use. The pricing page defaults to yearly billing.
- Price
- From $10 a month billed yearly, or $19 monthly. Free trial, no card.

04Claude
Best free option for short stories and ideas
Anthropic's Claude writes a decent short story from a good brief, and it is better still as a reader: paste in your scene and ask what is not working. For anything long you will be copying and pasting, and it only knows what is in the current conversation.
- Good
- Free plan. Thoughtful feedback. Apps on desktop and mobile.
- Watch out
- No story structure or memory between chats. Anthropic uses consumer chats for training if you allow it, if a chat is flagged for safety review, or if you opt in.
- Price
- Free. Pro $20 a month, or $17 billed yearly.

05ChatGPT
Best free option for quick stories, prompts and ideas
OpenAI's ChatGPT will write a bedtime story, a ghost story or ten story ideas in seconds. It is the easiest place to start, and the brief above works well in it.
- Good
- Fast, free, everywhere. A low-cost Go plan.
- Watch out
- Outside any manuscript, so long stories are hard to keep consistent. On individual plans OpenAI may train on your conversations unless you opt out.
- Price
- Free. Go $8 a month, Plus $20.

06Squibler
Best for generating a book-length draft
Squibler generates books and screenplays, and its site advertises a full 200 to 300 page book from your idea, with an editor to work on the result. It is the right tool if you want the most automation; you will still have a long revision ahead.
- Good
- A free plan with 500 AI credits every month. Unlimited AI credits on Pro. You keep ownership of what you create.
- Watch out
- Export needs a paid plan. We found no training statement in the pages we read.
- Price
- Plus $29.99 a month or $15.83 billed yearly. Pro $89.99 or $49.17 billed yearly.

07Novelcrafter
Best for story writing with any AI model you connect
Novelcrafter is a story workspace where you plug in the AI yourself, through OpenRouter, another provider or a local model. Turn scene beats into prose, chat with a scene, and keep your world in a Codex. Setup takes longer than anything else here, and you get more control for it.
- Good
- Any model, including local models. Editable, visible prompts. A deep Codex.
- Watch out
- AI is billed separately by your provider. Not for a quick story.
- Price
- $8, $14 or $20 a month with AI through your own provider; $4 without AI. 21-day trial.
